The Sentinel Source – Matt Nanci

“When was the last time you wrote in cursive? No, signing your name doesn’t count. We’re talking about writing complete sentences to take notes or write a letter, for example. The answer for most people is probably not in a long time. “I don’t really use cursive for anything,” said Anjalee K. Dreher, one of about two dozen people surveyed in downtown Keene. “And even my signature isn’t entirely cursive.” The 30-year-old Spofford resident said the last time she wrote in cursive was probably in 6th grade. As part of The Sentinel’s informal survey, Dreher and everyone else was asked to write, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” as best they could in cursive. That sentence was chosen because it’s a pangram, which means it’s a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet. Half of those asked to participate declined to attempt it, saying either their cursive was bad or they couldn’t remember how to write it. One middle-aged man said his cursive was so poor that he switched to writing in print years ago. An elderly couple said they didn’t even know what cursive was. Regardless of age, all of the writing participants said it was at least somewhat difficult to put the sentence to paper.”(more)
