Tulsa World – MIKE AVERILL

“The importance of early childhood literacy and providing caregivers with the tools to enhance a child’s development was the focus of a “Talking is Teaching” event Wednesday night. Talking is Teaching is a new effort to empower parents and caregivers to boost young children’s brain development and build their vocabularies by increasing the number of words they hear spoken to them every day…Researchers say an average child from a low-income family usually knows 500 words by age 4, while a child from a working-class family generally knows 700 and a child from a professional family knows 1,100. The goal of the initiative is to close that word gap.”(more)
