“In 2004, Sal Khan began remotely tutoring his 12-year-old cousin Nadia—a bright girl by his standards, who was struggling with unit conversion in math. Word about his free help spread, and his number of students multiplied. Khan then started posting YouTube videos explaining mathematical concepts. That effort evolved into the free online education platform known as Khan Academy, which launched in 2009 and is used by students from 190 countries and is offered in as many languages.” (more)
