“I’m a chemist, or at least I was in my working days. One of those STEM guys. STEM is the acronym for “science, technology, engineering and math” — a popular shorthand for where the jobs are. A national shortage of STEM workers has prompted schools to focus more attention on science and math courses and to consciously point students toward careers in those fields. If you pay a mint for higher education, you might as well have a job to show for it. Not surprisingly, that notion has gained a good bit of political support — from President Barack Obama on down. North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, dealing with limited state funds, said, “I don’t want to subsidize [a major] that’s not going to get someone a job.” In Florida, Governor Rick Scott has been a big supporter of STEM, even to the point of suggesting lower college tuitions for majors in those fields. Here in Collier County, school superintendent Kamela Patton has made STEM a key option for K-12 education.”(more)
