“One of the most important skills areas necessary in teaching today’s students is that of reading. In fact, reading is the only area worth teaching students. And, it is a much greater challenge than imagined. By reading, I do not mean just learning to read written words, but the depth and comprehension of reading numbers, reading situations, reading others, and the biggest challenge of all, reading themselves. It is imperative that schools teach the whole child — teach, not test. Students need to become more prepared to function and adapt in an ever-changing environment. All too often, parents have not effectively themselves undertaken the responsibility of learning to “read” as outlined above and, consequently, cannot model the aforementioned skills for their children.”(more)
