The Press Enterprise – Stephen Wall

“David Ontiveros listened as a math expert talked about counting on a number line. Now it was his turn to help his son. The task was adding 34 and 20. “How would you do that?” he asked. “You can count by fives, tens and ones.” David, 8, drew half circles with his pencil, touching every fifth number until he got to 50. Then, he counted by ones to reach 54. “Good job,” the father said to his first-grader. His daughter, 6-year-old Naomi, sat next to her brother. She solved the problem as well. Ontiveros was among a group of about 50 parents at a recent math workshop at Hawthorne Elementary School in Riverside.”(more)
